Preparation for the First Session
· Clothing: You are not required to undress fully for treatment. It is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing. In certain cases, you may be asked to uncover specific areas of your body to facilitate treatment, such as for the application of oils or for focused manual therapy. If you are uncomfortable with this, please feel free to discuss your preferences with your osteopath, and arrangements can be made, including the presence of a chaperone if desired.
· Modesty and Gowns: Towels will typically be used to cover exposed areas of the body during treatment, and clinical gowns are available upon request.
Number of Sessions Required
· The number of sessions required varies depending on individual circumstances, such as the nature and duration of the condition being treated, as well as your overall health. In most cases, patients experience some improvement after 2-3 sessions. If there is no noticeable progress after this period, the treatment plan will be reassessed to identify any factors hindering recovery and to determine the most appropriate course of action.
Pain During Treatment
· Osteopathic treatment is generally not painful, although certain areas of the body may be tender, especially if there is underlying muscle or joint tension. The osteopath will always strive to apply techniques with sensitivity to minimize discomfort. While mild soreness may occur following treatment—similar to the feeling after physical exercise—this typically resolves within 24-48 hours.
Use of Painkillers
· While painkillers can provide temporary relief from symptoms, they do not address the underlying cause of pain. Osteopathic treatment focuses on identifying and treating the root cause of your discomfort to promote long-term recovery. Painkillers may also have side effects, such as drowsiness or stomach upset, which are not a concern with osteopathy, a more holistic approach to pain management.
Osteopathy During Pregnancy or Post-Surgery
· Osteopathic treatment is safe and beneficial during pregnancy, as it can help alleviate the strain on your body due to the physical changes associated with pregnancy. It is also effective in preparing the body for labor. Following surgery, osteopathy can assist in the rehabilitation process, helping to reduce muscle tension and maintaining joint health, thereby supporting a smooth recovery.
Follow-up Sessions
· During subsequent visits, your condition will be reassessed to monitor progress. This may involve a brief re-examination and adjustments to your treatment plan based on your response to therapy. Additionally, advice regarding exercises or lifestyle modifications to enhance recovery will be provided, and any questions you may have will be addressed.
The “Clicking” Sounds During Adjustments
· The sounds you may hear during osteopathic adjustments—often described as “clicking” or “cracking”—are caused by the release of gas (mainly nitrogen) from the synovial fluid in the joint. This occurs when the pressure within the joint is decreased during manipulation. The release of gas is a natural physiological process and is not painful. Some patients may experience mild muscle soreness in the 24-48 hours following an adjustment, but this typically resolves quickly.
